It all started 23 years ago as a way to engage clients and has since grown into one of PNC’s most popular and anticipated economic reports: The PNC Christmas Price Index.

PNC calculates the “CPI” each year as a fun, lighthearted way to look at the increasing cost of goods and services bought by the True Love in the holiday classic, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.”

James P. Dunigan
Executive Vice President
Managing Executive, Investments
PNC Wealth Management and institutional investments

In his role as managing executive of investments for PNC Financial Services Group, James Dunigan is responsible for the investment strategy, equity research, equity management, investment services and investment advisor research groups for the open architecture platform of PNC Wealth Management. Dunigan is also responsible for the development and execution of investment policies, strategies and tactics.

“The Christmas Price Index reflects the lighter side of the trends we follow and is indicative of the high volume of customized research we do for our clients,” says Dunigan.

Rebekah McCahan
Assistant Vice President
Investment Strategist
PNC Wealth Management and Institutional Investments

McCahan serves as a member of the Investment Strategy team for PNC Wealth Management and Institutional Investments. She is responsible for developing asset allocation models, directing asset allocation changes, analyzing new investment instruments for consideration in client accounts, and helping to create quarterly and monthly investment outlooks and reviews. She is also the author of numerous economic and investment strategy publications, including the annual PNC Christmas Price Index.  McCahan assumed the True Love’s shopping duties in 1986 by putting a price tag on each of the items from "The 12 Days of Christmas.” Evaluating french hens, maids-a-milking and gold rings reveals some distinctive economic trends.

“What’s really surprising is that our index follows overall Consumer Price Index trends,” notes McCahan. “To think that the cost of a partridge in a pear tree would mirror what’s going on at Target, for example, is pretty interesting.
